Different Approaches

When you start a specific pose the first step is to find a block that will fit the pose without too much wastage. If the block has a flat surface you can draw on the main view in pencil. You should also make a maquette to work out the angle of the limbs etc for the full 360°. The maths will be easier if you make this to an exact proportion eg. one quarter scale. Then you can start to rough out, cutting to the lines, and using calipers to scale up measurements from the maquette.

•  Alternatively.., you might find a stone/log with an interesting shape then do sketches of poses that are suggested by the shape. Rotate the block and you could find several alternative possibilities. For this approach the block itself will heavily influence you, so take your time choosing one.
